A Long Journey With Friends

The management committee of BYDS would love to invite you to a show that explores twenty years of arts and cultural work through performance and image, song and dance.

The story so far…

Since June 1991, Tim Carroll and hundreds of collaborators have instigated over 130 innovative projects in performance, hip hop, Oral History, theatre, visual arts, public art, aerosol and dance. Projects exploring violence, cultural diversity, nationalism, technology, racism, Aboriginality and love have been instigated with many communities.

Hundreds of stories from community members have been shared with a broad range of public through a variety of media.

Now Tim, Nitin Vengurlekar, Janie Gibson, Frank Mainoo and a bunch of BYDS collaborators want to tell some of their own.

Refreshments will be provided during and after the show.

Deep Corridors

The Bankstown Youth Development Scheme (BYDS) is holding Deep Corridors, a free symposium for emerging artists, at the Bankstown Arts Centre on 30 March and 13 April, in the lead up to Youth Week.

Deep Corridors will feature two different forums exploring film and literature and will follow the artistic endeavours of young and established artists in South West Sydney.

The interactive forums hopes to act as a launch pad for creating and fostering relationships between artists and the community, and are open to anyone with an interest in the arts and aims to spark ongoing dialogue between artists in the region.

Andy Ko, a writer from South-West Sydney who will be on the literature panels, said the symposium would allows young writers to mature and share information.

“Deep Corridors - Writing in the West is a fitting event grown from the incredible ongoing activity of BYDS’s Westside Publications that has, for years, nurtured young and emerging writers and their work, helping these voices reach wide audiences through quality publications, literary events, and theatrical productions, stimulating cross-cultural dialogue, critical reflection, and artistic engagement.”

Maria Tran, a Fairfield resident who is going thorugh Screen NSW’s Producer Extension Program will be on the film panel. She said she was excited about the opportunities the symposium offered.

“It is so important that the young people in Western Sydney have opportunities not only to make films but also to get together, in open dialogue and reflect on our journeys of making our stories on the big screens. I believe Deep Corridors is about that, and I’m quite excited to be a part of the sharing.”

The forums are being co-ordinated by two young locals and each forum will be catered and will feature visual art around the venue.

Deep Corridors – Visionaries will be held on Friday March 30th at 7pm and will explore film.

Deep Corridors – Writing in the West will be held on Friday April 13th at 7pm and will focus upon literature.

For any enquiries or bookings please email projects@byds.org.au or phone BYDS on 9793 8324.

To celebrate World Read Aloud Day, Bankstown City Library held a morning session in which the audience were invited to read a piece of their own choosing. Isabella Whitcher and Khadija Mossavi both read their own stories from Three Novelettes. Tim Carroll, acting director of BYDS, read a narrative poem, The Bridge, which he wrote for 2009’s Westside: Fill Your Bucket and Samantha Hogg, BYDS sub editor and blogger, recited from memory Lewis Carroll’s Jabberwocky poem. Bankstown’s own mayor, Khal Asfour, read two of Dorothy Kamal’s stories fromThree Novelettes.

Unfortunately, the camera we took to the library did not have a memory card in it. Fortunately, the Mayor had a camerawoman with him, further details of these photos will be announced in the future.

World Read Aloud Day: March 7, 2012

Worldwide at least 793 million people remain illiterate.

Imagine a world where everyone can read…

World Read Aloud Day is about taking action to show the world that the right to read and write belongs to all people. World Read Aloud Day motivates children, teens, and adults worldwide to celebrate the power of words, especially those words that are shared from one person to another, and creates a community of readers advocating for every child’s right to a safe education and access to books and technology.

By raising our voices together on this day we show the world’s children that we support their future: that they have the right to read, to write, and to share their words to change the world.

It’s time to join the Global Literacy Movement.
